Question:
How can I get my kids to start thinking about college and doing well in school? They just don't seem to care!

Hi Paula,
Sounds similar to what we went through with one of my sons. His grades were average and expressed little interest in a college education. We knew that if we kept pressing he would just shut down more, so we tried to get more specific with subjects that would relate to his potential life interests. When we asked him about what he might want to do with his life, his response was "to make a lot of money as a stock broker"....so then math becomes very important obviously, but rather than us tell him, we had a friend at an investment firm meet with him for a half hour to lay a little reality on him of what it would take. He was a sophomore at the time, so he had another year to get his act together which he did-not straight A's, but a much more solid student. He's at a decent school now and is longer interested in finance (energy now), but the spark is there finally. What year are your kids currently?

I have a friend who hated school growing up. He would call up the main office pretending he was his father just so he could stay home! His mother knew that not everyone's path is academia, so they started cooking together. It's something she loved and as it turns out, so did he. He actually became obsessed with it. Today he owns his own successful restaurant and he employs the entire family. You kids obviously have a terrific, concerned Mom as well. Don't give up!

Question:
I have heard that kids applying for the college, especially in the Northeast have a harder time of getting into top tier and ivy league schools, because most universities don't want too many kids from the same geographic area--any merit to this?

|
Absolutely, I used to be in admissions at a top tier school and we always looked for geographic and cultural diversity. It's not always fair, but it's the way it is...at least from my experience.
