Question:
Aside from SAT scores and grades, is there anything else I can do to increase the chances that I will be accepted to the college of my choice?

Entrepreneurial endeavors help as does charitable work too. That, and rich parents who can make really big donations :-)

I think with the population stats being what they are and how competitive it is you have to go way beyond that. Volunteering for worthy charities is good, but perhaps founding one or launching a small business on your own as well. The more competitive the school, the more this will help you stand out.

Also, a lot of colleges have an early application process/immediate decision option. This usually increases your chances of getting into the school you're applying to. Also, be sure to go for an interview if it's an option. I know that I went in for an optional interview and it at least put my face to my application and I was soon accepted.

Don't forget how important the essay question is! I worked in admissions at my school last year and saw the essays come through. It helps the college distinguish between applicants with similar scores. If you have similar numbers the essay will help you stand out. So make sure you take it seriously and proofread multiple times.

Also any outside volunteer work can add to being a well-rounded person. They look for students like that to be apart of their school.
