Question:
When training for a marathon I've read different things, what's the best distance to run a week before the race - 20 miles, 18 miles or other?

There are different training methods that balance between mind and body - leading up to a race many think you shouldn't exceed the 20 mile mark two weeks before the marathon. Some people train up to 15 miles or so max, then just go for it marthon day. I like to know I can do it, so I often run marathon distances or greater months before, but always allow my body to heal the final month of training with a few days up to 18 miles. Good luck and congrats on doing something so few people can do!

Question:
I've never been able to get below an 8 minute mile, does anyone have any tips?

Your body needs proper time to rest as you increase distances, so make sure you build down time into your training. Also mixing it up helps - I dropped my times when I started doing days with just wind sprints and also try fartleks - which means you run a couple miles, then actually walk short intervals, believe it or not - it helps over the long haul!
